JailCrunch
OCCRP journalists conducted dozens of interviews with convicted criminals throughout Eastern Europe. The videos are an extension of the Jail Crunch visualization and provide a personal window into how crime works in the region. Every few weeks, OCCRP will release a new inmate interview shedding light on how common crimes work across Eastern Europe.
OCCRP reporters filed freedom of information requests to prison authorities across Eastern Europe. The interactive visualization is a compilation of the data received from each prison authority, organized to demonstrate similarities and differences between prison demographics and crime categories across the region. The visualization comprises data received at the end of 2013, and will be updated periodically as new jail data is obtained.
OCCRP consolidated a portion of the criminal conviction data into six major crime categories. In some cases, jail authorities provided incomplete or unclassifiable data, which OCCRP reporters organized as best as they could. The raw data provided by each prison authority can be downloaded as a PDF below the individual country statistics.
