In September 2015, American journalist Brian Krebs published a three-part investigation into a sophisticated ATM card-skimming scheme targeting tourists in the Riviera Maya region of Mexico. The leader of what OCCRP has now dubbed the Riviera Maya gang, Florian Tudor, was furious and ordered all the skimming devices to be removed from their ATMs before authorities could find them. But the exposé, which was published the year after the gang set up their scheme, didn’t stop them for long. Although the story made international headlines, the Riviera Maya gang continued skimming for another four years, raking in hundreds of millions of dollars.
